State of AI Apps Report 2025 is Live!
In many ways, 2025 has already been an exciting year for the PC/Console gaming world. While GTA 6 has been delayed — thus kicking its industry impacts down the road — there are still plenty of fascinating market trends that professionals will want to keep an eye on. Think of our PC/Console Gaming Index as your market cheat sheet, breaking down everything from the digital advertising strategies of top publishers, to the audiences and regions fueling growth.
PC/Console games have already been downloaded over 1 billion times in 2025, with Steam taking the largest share thanks to its dominance on PC (and PC gaming’s widespread adoption). PlayStation isn’t far behind, and Xbox still commands a sizable portion of the market.
Steam not only dominates when it comes to user acquisition: it also appears to be on track for another record-breaking year in terms of revenue. Comparing the platform’s performance in 2025 (thus far) to the same time period in 2024, revenue from game purchases is up 15% — and is on track to top $12 billion by the end of the year.
Drilling into genre popularity, it is clear that the core classics continue to win the day for PC/Console players. At least from a downloads perspective, Action games (262M), Shooters (189M), and RPGs (131M) have seen the most interest in 2025 so far.
Electronic Arts (EA) is so far the top publisher of the year by downloads, with its success powered by a winning portfolio of sports and IP franchises, as well as popular releases in the co-op space with its EA Originals Split Fiction and It Takes Two. Microsoft and Sony come in second and third places, each with their own catalogue of PC/Console franchises. Taking a closer look at each platform, we see that Sony content outperforms Microsoft on PlayStation, while Microsoft outperforms Sony on Xbox. Microsoft games see outsized downloads on Xbox in part due to strong Game Pass integration.
The remainder of the list showcases several of the usual suspects, alongside some new entrants. NetEase’s Marvel Rivals is the most downloaded PC/Console game of the year, and Kepler Interactive’s AA hits Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and REMATCH provided it with massive reach.
Microsoft’s impressive performance this year has been driven largely by acquired franchises, namely Call of Duty and Minecraft — two big cross-platform hits. On PC/Console, Bethesda and Xbox Games Studios make up the majority of downloads, while King brings in more than half of all downloads on mobile.
When it comes to the AAA space, Sports games like EA SPORTS FC 25 and NBA 2K25 have been dominating — alongside Action RPG hit Monster Hunter Wilds. For AA games, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the clear winner, as well as the recipient of universal critical acclaim. The turn-based RPG has been downloaded even more times than NBA 2K25 so far this year. In the indie space, R.E.P.O. has seen the most units sold, unsurprising given its status as a phenomenon for content creators and friend groups alike. However, the number two indie game by units sold, Schedule I, saw comparable downloads performance at double the price.
