The fourth quarter of 2021 saw significant activity among the top 5 entertainment apps on iOS in South Africa. According to data from Sensor Tower, these apps displayed diverse trends in weekly downloads, revenue, and active user metrics.

TikTok demonstrated a notable increase in weekly revenue, starting at around $13.7K in late September and peaking at approximately $23.6K by the end of December. Downloads for the app also surged, reaching 24.1K in the last week of December, up from 13.7K at the start of the quarter. Active user numbers fluctuated slightly but remained strong, ending the quarter with around 689.7K users.

Netflix maintained steady weekly revenue, beginning at $19.1K and settling at about $17.6K by the end of the quarter. Downloads saw a gradual increase, from 7.2K in late September to 8.2K in the final week of December. Active users for Netflix remained stable, averaging around 261K throughout the quarter.

Showmax showed a significant spike in downloads in early November, reaching 9.2K, but generally hovered around 2.5K to 7.4K for the rest of the quarter. Active users saw a steady rise, peaking at 32.1K in the last week of December.

DStv Stream had consistent weekly downloads, ranging from 3.3K to 4.6K. Active users also remained stable, with a slight increase towards the end of the quarter, finishing at about 82.3K.

MyDStv SA experienced a lower download rate compared to the other apps, with numbers ranging from 1.2K to 2K. Active users for MyDStv SA fluctuated slightly, ending the quarter with around 8K users.
