Top 5 Android Entertainment Apps in Africa - Q4 2021

The fourth quarter of 2021 showcased interesting trends in the performance of the top 5 entertainment apps on the Android platform in Africa. According to data from Sensor Tower, the following apps stood out in terms of weekly downloads, revenue, and active users: Netflix, Google Play Games, Viu: Dramas, TV Shows & Movies, Showmax 1.0, and YouTube Kids.

Netflix experienced fluctuating weekly downloads throughout the quarter. Initially, downloads surged to about 456K in early October before gradually declining, later stabilizing around 170K by the end of December. Active user numbers showed a slight dip at the beginning but picked up momentum towards the end of the quarter, reaching approximately 3.7M.

Google Play Games saw a more consistent trend in weekly downloads, starting at 229K in late September and fluctuating between 150K and 200K throughout the quarter. Active users peaked at around 7.3M at the start of the quarter, dipped mid-quarter, and then rose again to around 6.8M by the end of December.

Viu: Dramas, TV Shows & Movies displayed a steady increase in both weekly downloads and revenue. Downloads began at 90K in late September and climbed to approximately 190K by the end of December. The weekly revenue hovered around $3K throughout the quarter. Active users also exhibited growth, starting at 976K and reaching around 1.1M by the end of the quarter.

Showmax 1.0 had an interesting trajectory with weekly downloads starting at 274K in late September, dipping mid-quarter, and then rising again to about 166K by the end of December. Active users followed a similar trend, beginning at 1.6M, experiencing a mid-quarter dip, and recovering to around 1.4M by the end of the quarter.

YouTube Kids maintained a relatively stable download rate, starting at 103K in late September and ending at around 100K by the end of December. Active users saw a gradual increase, peaking at approximately 1M towards the quarter's end.
