European Book Apps' Performance in Q1 2021: A Sensor Tower Analysis

The first quarter of 2021 has shown varying performance trends for the top book applications in Europe. Here's a snapshot of how five key players fared on a unified platform, according to data from Sensor Tower.

Wattpad - Read & Write Stories, with its origin in Canada, evidenced a significant user base with weekly active users peaking at nearly 9M by the end of March, up from 7M at the start of the year. Downloads started at 212K in the first week of January and saw a general downward trend, settling at 177K by the end of March. The revenue followed a somewhat fluctuating pattern, ranging from 39K to 51K USD weekly.

Contrastingly, Amazon Kindle saw no revenue, but the app maintained a steady presence with weekly active users hovering around 2M throughout the quarter. Downloads showed a downward trend from 153K at the end of December to 88K by the end of March.

Audible: Audio Entertainment by Audible, Inc. from the US experienced a slight increase in revenue, from 12K USD in the last week of December to 17K USD by the end of March. The app's downloads started at 248K and decreased to 137K over the same period, while weekly active users saw a decrease from 2.8M to 2.6M.

Swedish-based Storytel: Audiobooks & Ebooks showed more consistency in revenue, starting the quarter at 273K USD and ending with 258K USD, despite some fluctuations. Downloads for Storytel began at 134K and ended the quarter at 112K, with weekly active users reaching a peak of 1.3M in late March.

Lastly, Russia's Litres: Books and audiobooks exhibited a stable revenue pattern, starting at 142K USD and ending the quarter at 202K USD. Downloads saw a decline from 151K in the first week of January to 90K by the end of March, while active users fluctuated around the 900K mark.
