Indie and New IP Break Out, Without Denting AAA

Let's compare the fastest-selling PC/Console games of 2026 to the year prior, to see which genres have been gaining steam, which developers are responsible, and how to make sense of it all.

Indie and New IP Break Out, Without Denting AAA

More new PlayStation, Steam and Xbox games are breaking out than a year ago, and indie studios account for almost all of the growth. 76 games launched between September 2025 and August 2026 sold 500,000+ paid units in their first 30 days, up from 55 a year earlier.

Big franchises are not going anywhere: AAA still makes up nearly half of the units sold share. But the new breakouts come from small studios with new IP - from low budget co-op "friendslop" hits to long-awaited indie sequels.

Key Takeaways

  • More breakout launches. 76 games launched between September 2025 and August 2026 sold 500k+ paid units in their first 30 days, up from 55 a year earlier. Together they sold 182.4M paid units in their first month, up 51%.

  • Indie drove the growth. Indie breakouts rose from 13 to 33, or 43% of the total (24% a year earlier), and indie first-month sales more than doubled. Friendslop hits led the way, alongside a wider wave of other indie new IP and sequels.

  • New series and new IP broke through. The first games in new series made up 53% of breakouts, up from 38% (40 vs 21). 35 breakouts were new IP, and indie studios made 27 of them.

  • AAA held steady. AAA breakouts edged up from 27 to 28, and AAA still takes nearly half of first-month paid units. Licensed IP held at 20% of breakouts.

Indie breakouts more than doubled to 33

Indie studios produced 20 of the 21 extra breakout launches in the 2026 cohort. Indie breakouts rose from 13 to 33, while AA held at 15 and AAA edged up from 27 to 28. Indie's share of breakout launches jumped from 24% to 43%.

Indie 1

Indie's share of first-month sales rose to 38%

Indie breakouts sold 69.9M paid units in their first month, up 119% from 31.9M, led by MECCHA CHAMELEON (13.3M), How to Fish (7.9M) and Slay the Spire 2 (5.9M). AAA first-month sales still grew 38% to 87.8M, led by Battlefield 6, EA SPORTS FC 26 and ARC Raiders. Indie's share of first-month units rose from 26% to 38%, while AAA's slipped from 53% to 48%.

Indie 2

New series made up half of all breakouts

The first games in the new series went from 21 to 40 breakout launches, while sequels, remakes and remasters held roughly flat at 36. Sequels still sell more per game, taking 55% of first-month units in the 2026 cohort.

Indie3

Original IP releases grew from 44 to 61 breakouts, and indie studios made 32 of them. Licensed IP, from sports leagues to film, TV and toys, held steady at 20% share.

4 original vs licensed ip

Friendslop made the biggest indie hits, but not most of them

Cheap online co-op and party games, often called "friendslop", produced the two biggest indie launches and 46% of indie first-month sales. MECCHA CHAMELEON alone sold 13.3M paid units in its first 30 days, second only to Battlefield 6 across all 2026 launches. But friendslop accounted for only 4 of the 20 extra indie breakouts:

  • Friendslop: 5 → 9 breakouts, 19.2M → 32.3M first-month units (MECCHA CHAMELEON, How to Fish, RV There Yet?)

  • Other indie new IP: 7 → 18 breakouts, 11.2M → 22.9M (Escape from Duckov, Dispatch, Megabonk)

  • Indie sequels: 1 → 6 breakouts, 1.4M → 14.7M (Slay the Spire 2, Hollow Knight: Silksong)
