As the year 2022 wrapped up, music and podcast apps continued to entertain and engage audiences across Europe. Data from Sensor Tower provides a clear picture of how these apps fared in the last quarter of the year. Here, we delve into the performance of the top five contenders in the category.
Deezer: Music Player, Podcast saw its revenue fluctuate, peaking at almost €1.2 million in November before falling to around €970k at the end of October and then recovering to around €1.1 million by the year's end. Downloads showed an upward trend from around 82k in mid-October to over 126k in the last week of December. Weekly active users (WAU) varied, with a high of nearly 9.8 million in late November, but ended the quarter with around 9.3 million users.
YouTube Music experienced a decline in revenue from around €750k at the start of the quarter to about €650k in the final week of December. Downloads, however, were on the rise, with numbers increasing from about 210k to over 307k in the same period. The WAU count for YouTube Music also saw an increase, starting at around 46.6 million and reaching a peak of over 50.9 million in late November.
Amazon Music: Songs & Podcasts showed a slight dip in revenue from around €530k to just under €500k by the end of Q4. The app's downloads had a notable spike, jumping from around 150k to over 305k at the end of October, and concluded the quarter with approximately 262k downloads. The active user base experienced a high of over 5.1 million in late October, followed by a decrease to around 4.4 million by the year's end.
SoundCloud: Discover New Music saw its revenue hover around €260k to €270k during most of the quarter, with a peak of over €300k in late November. The app's downloads remained relatively steady, with a slight increase from around 176k to 180k by December's end. WAU for SoundCloud displayed a slight decline, starting at around 19.1 million and ending the quarter with about 18.6 million.
TIDAL Music: HiFi, Ad-free had a steady revenue stream, remaining between €180k and €200k for most of the quarter, with a peak of around €223k in late November. Downloads for TIDAL spiked in mid-November, reaching over 33k, and concluded the quarter with around 40k downloads. The WAU saw a peak of over 941k in mid-November and December, with a slight decrease to around 865k by the end of December.
