In the third quarter of 2023, the travel app market in Africa showcased some intriguing trends. Here’s a closer look at the performance of the top five travel apps on a unified platform, based on data from Sensor Tower.

Bolt: Request a Ride saw its weekly downloads fluctuate throughout the quarter. Starting at around 138K in late June, it experienced a slight decline to 111K in mid-July before bouncing back to a peak of 169K by the end of September. Active users for Bolt also showed a dynamic pattern, beginning at 2.1M and ending the quarter at approximately 2.2M.

inDrive. Save on city rides experienced a stable trend in weekly downloads, starting strong with 186K in late June and maintaining around 169K by the end of September. The app’s active users remained relatively consistent, starting at 1.38M and ending at about 1.37M.

Uber - Request a ride maintained a steady download rate throughout the quarter, beginning at 132K in late June and fluctuating slightly to end at 113K in late September. Uber’s active users demonstrated growth, starting at 2.77M and peaking at 3.1M by the end of the quarter.

Booking.com: Hotels & Travel showed a decreasing trend in weekly downloads, starting at 65K in late June and dropping to 57K by the end of September. Active users for Booking.com were stable, starting at 739K and ending at approximately 753K.

DiDi Rider: Affordable rides experienced some fluctuations in downloads, beginning at 75K in late June and ending at 72K in late September. The app’s active user base showed a slight increase from 270K in late June to 291K by the end of September.
