During the fourth quarter of 2021, South Africa's top news applications exhibited diverse trends in downloads, revenue, and active users. According to Sensor Tower data, here are the key insights into the performance of these apps.

X saw significant fluctuations in its weekly downloads, starting at approximately 41K in early October and peaking at around 59K in the second week. By the end of December, downloads had settled to roughly 29K. Revenue for X showed a steady increase, particularly notable from late November to the end of December, where it peaked at about $203. Weekly active users remained relatively stable, varying between 2.65M and 2.75M throughout the quarter.

Reddit experienced consistent weekly downloads, ranging from about 3.6K to 6.6K, with a noticeable uptick in mid-December. Revenue for Reddit fluctuated but generally stayed within the $300 to $577 range, peaking towards the end of November and mid-December. Active users showed a gradual increase, starting at around 85K in late September and reaching approximately 95K by the end of December.

News24: Trusted News. First had a varied performance in weekly downloads, with numbers ranging from 1.5K to 2.9K. Revenue was more dynamic, peaking at approximately $11.5K in early November and maintaining relatively high values throughout December. Active users for News24 were quite stable, fluctuating between 192K and 218K over the quarter.

IEC South Africa showed a peak in weekly downloads around late October and early November, reaching up to 22K. However, downloads dropped significantly after this period, falling to as low as 55 by the end of December. No revenue data was provided for IEC South Africa.
